Pope Francis is in critical condition.
The Vatican says the 88-year-old had a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis’ early Saturday.
The Holy Father was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and a lung infection last week.
The Vatican adds that the Pope remains alert, and spent the day in an armchair.
But they say he is more unwell than yesterday.
Francis became the Pope in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict.
