Federal Liberal leader was in Victoria, B.C., on Sunday, to attend a party rally.
His speech focused on Canada’s efforts to combat the trade tariffs imposed by the United States.
Carney told the gathering that Canada’s old relationship with the Americans is now over.
“We are living through a hinge moment, and we’re not coming together, unfortunately, with our American ally,” says Carney.
“It’s a hinge moment caused by our American ally. But we are coming together as Canadians, and this is what is fundamental.”
Carney outlined efforts to fight against the tariffs, saying it has taught the country a lesson.
“We’ve learned a lesson, which is that we have to look out for ourselves, and we have to take care of each other. And that’s what this election is about,” says Carney.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was in Halifax where he unveiled a national rent control program.
“We plan to end fixed-term leases. We want to end rent evictions and dem evictions,” says Singh.
“We want to strengthen tenant unions to be able to negotiate for their tenants with the landlords. We want to end the collusion that’s going on where large corporate landlords are colluding to jack up rent.”
Singh also proposes new rules around federal funding that is provided to affordable housing projects.
“If any province or municipality wants federal investments, federal funds to build homes, they have to put in place laws that protect renters. We’re not going to build affordable homes for those homes to just turn into unaffordable homes because there’s no protections in place,” says Singh.
“We want to make sure that people actually have protections that renters are protected. Our plan is to end fixed-term leases.”
Conservative Pierre Poilievre outlined his plans to help people with drug addictions by supporting recovery programs.
“To fund this program, we will end federal funding for opioids, defund the drug dens, sue the opioid manufacturers and consulting companies who created this crisis,” says Poilievre.
“We will fund directly those people who need the help through groups that have success in delivering drug-free outcomes.”
Poilievre also plans to close safe injection sites located within 500 metres of schools, hospitals, daycares, playgrounds and other places where the community is vulnerable.
“These drug consumption sites do not work.”
The federal election will take place on April 28th.
