NDP prepared to close tax loopholes on corporations

todayApril 5, 2025

Background

The Federal NDP proposes to end the practice of large corporations registering in foreign countries for tax purposes.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh takes direct aim at a company once chaired by Liberal leader Mark Carney that set up in Bermuda.

He says he will work to close tax loopholes that allow companies to shelter money outside the country.

“First and foremost, we’ll put an end to agreements with other countries that permit tax havens,” says Singh.

“Secondly, we’ll put a requirement in place. The countries or the companies have to show an economic purpose when they register in a foreign country. And if there isn’t an actual economic purpose then they still have to pay their taxes.”

Singh says if companies make a profit in Canada, they should contribute back to the country.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre promises to get tough on intimate partner violence.

He is promising to create a new criminal offence for assault that will result in tougher sentences for those convicted.

Poilievre is also proposing changes to the granting of bail and the ability to downgrade murder charges in a domestic violence case.

“We will end the senseless practice of downgrading murder of an intimate partner to manslaughter simply because the murderer claims that it was a crime of passion,” says Poilievre.

“A Conservative government will make sure that anyone who murders their intimate partner, their child or their partner’s child will have a first-degree conviction.”

Liberal leader Mark Carney announced support for CBC Radio Canada with a promise for additional money.

He also proposes to modernize the public broadcaster’s mandate and provide it with the resources needed to fulfill its renewed mission.

“By strengthening our public broadcaster, we’re protecting our identity and our culture and helping it to shine around the world,” says Carney.

The federal election is on April 28th.
