Nova Scotia Power investigating cyber attack

todayApril 28, 2025

Background

Nova Scotia Power is responding to a cyber attack that gave unauthorized access to certain parts of the Canadian network and servers.

The utility says their IT team is working with third-party cybersecurity experts to restore the affected “systems safely and securely,” according to a news release on their website.

They have not said what information was accessed. They also will not provide any more information than what is in the news release while the incident is under investigation, according to a spokesperson.

Once they detected the threat, Nova Scotia Power activated their incident response, using third-party cyber security experts, to contain and isolate the affected servers and prevent the attackers from moving to other parts of the network, they said.

There is no disruption to Canadian electricity generation, transmission, or distribution, the Maritime Link or the Brunswick Pipeline.

“The incident has not impacted the utility’s ability to safely and reliably serve customers in Nova Scotia. There has been no impact to Emera’s U.S. or Caribbean utilities,” the utility wrote.

The utility plans to release their first quarter financial results on May 8, which will go ahead as planned. They say they do not expect the cyber attack to have “a material impact on the financial performance of the business.”

Nova Scotia Power also posted on social media that they are having technical issues with their phone line, and an issue preventing people from accessing their MyAccount system.

You can still report an outage or emergency through the outage line at 1-877-428-6004.
